Mary Stuart

In a new version by Peter Oswald

5 MAY - 28 MAY 2011 — Drama

Auckland Theatre Company

160 minutes long, including an interval

For a queen to stand, a queen must fall.

Featuring eleven of New Zealand's finest actors, this theatrical tour-de-force hinges on a brilliantly imagined meeting between Mary Queen of Scots, focus of simmering Catholic dissent, and her cousin, Elizabeth, Queen of England, who has imprisoned her.

Isolated by their duplicitous male courtiers, the women collide headlong, each wrestling with the rank, ambition and destiny their births have bestowed, against a thrilling background of political intrigue, plot and counter-plot.

ATC'S production of Mary Stuart provides a thrilling introduction to Friedrich Schiller - the philosopher, poet and playwright who is honoured in Germany with the same kind of respect that English speakers reserve for Shakespeare...Director Colin McColl has brought together a superb ensemble and achieves a fine balance between intense physicality and poetic eloquence.
