Julius Caesar's firm and popular hold on the leadership of Rome inspires moves to have him crowned. Fuelled by envy, ambition and concern that a coronation would see the end of the Roman republican ideal, a conspiracy evolves, gathered and led by Cassius and Brutus, to cut Caesar down. Despite prophetic warnings- "Beware the Ides of March"- and the urgings of his wife, Calpurnia, Caesar's fateful decision to attend the Senate leads to assassination and civil war, as the conspirators and their opponents battle for the hearts and minds of their countrymen and control of Rome.

Shakespeare's classic account of political machination leading to social upheaval is perhaps more relevant for New Zealanders today than ever. ATC's first Winter Shakespeare at Sky City promises to be a powerful and provocative political thriller.
